FFMMethodology

How We Work

Transparency in how we gather, categorize, and present information.

What FFM Is

Four Months Max is a satirical commentary project that tracks publicly reported legal outcomes of notable cryptocurrency personalities. The name is deliberately provocative—a commentary on the observation that significant fortunes often seem to correlate with surprisingly short sentences.

We don't take a political stance. We present publicly available information with sources so you can form your own conclusions.

What FFM Is Not

  • Legal advice or a legal resource
  • A “hit piece” or targeted attack on individuals
  • A definitive legal database
  • Journalism (we aggregate reporting, we don't produce it)
  • Affiliated with any law enforcement, government, or legal entity

Category Definitions

Did Time (WentToPrison)

Individuals who have served or are currently serving time in an actual correctional facility (prison or jail). Home detention does not qualify.

Sentenced

Individuals who have received a formal sentence from a court. This may include prison time, probation, fines, or other penalties.

Convicted / No Jail

Individuals found guilty or who pled guilty but received sentences that did not include incarceration—such as probation, fines, or home detention.

Arrested / Pending

Individuals who have been arrested, charged, or indicted but have not yet been tried or sentenced. Their cases are ongoing.

Civil Only

Individuals who have faced only civil enforcement actions (SEC, CFTC, etc.) without criminal charges. Civil cases can result in fines and bans but not imprisonment.

Sourcing Policy

Every entry in our dataset must include at least one source. We prioritize:

  1. Official government documents (DOJ press releases, court records)
  2. Major news outlets (Reuters, Bloomberg, NYT, WSJ, BBC)
  3. Reputable industry publications (CoinDesk, The Block)

We avoid social media posts, personal blogs, or unverified sources as primary references. When facts are disputed or uncertain, we note this in the entry.

Accuracy & Updates

Legal statuses change frequently. Appeals succeed, pardons are granted, new charges are filed. We try to keep entries current but cannot guarantee real-time accuracy.

If you notice an error or outdated information, please help us correct it by contributing to the dataset.

Data Format

The dataset is stored as JSON and validated against a strict schema using Zod. Each person entry includes:

  • Unique ID and name (with optional aliases)
  • Role and categories
  • Legal status
  • Sentence details (if applicable)
  • Custody information
  • Timeline of key events
  • Source links (required)
  • Last updated timestamp
